Cultivation mode:

• Fertilized soil: To promote successful germination, start by soaking the fertilized coconut lozenges in 5 to 6 times their volume of water; they will instantly swell. The pitaya, or dragon plant, is a cactus, so you can add sand, but avoid muddy and moist soils.
• Sowing: open the bag and pour seeds into your hand. If they are too small, add sand to make it easier to sow. For sowing, sprinkle the seeds on the wet, uncompact coconut soil, a maximum of 2 to 3 seeds per pot. Save the rest of the seeds for later sowing or to sow directly in your garden or on your balcony when the weather is nice. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and tamp lightly.
• Watering: ideally, use rainwater or filtered water (without chlorine). Prefer a fine rain watering, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just wet, without gorging it with water, throughout the culture. Think of the Earth as a sponge that is wet and then drained. Do not let the coconut soil dry.
• Germination: the plant needs a warm and humid climate. Expose it to sunlight behind a window, without putting it over a heater, and ideally with a plastic bottle of water cut out to serve as a greenhouse. Seeds can take a week to germinate. Keep the seedlings under the plastic bottle for as long as possible to retain heat and moisture. The plant then grows normally if well watered.
• Transplanting: When the seedlings emerge and reach a height of 5 to 10 cm, select only one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Water to promote regrowth and keep inside behind a window in contact with the sun.
• Harvest: The plant is climbing and will need a support to grow, ideally in a veranda with heat and humidity in the air. You will have to be patient, because it will take 2 years between the seed and the fruit.

Our advice: the plant remains a cactus, so be careful of excess water. No more than 2 waterings per week. The fruit is delicious when ripe, and the particular smell is normal. The plant can also reproduce by cutting.
