Funny gardening kit "tu es mon soleil" – sunflower

Growing instructions:

Soil: To encourage successful germination, start by soaking the fertilized coco pellets in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will swell instantly. Unfold them and fill the pot with a spoon. Remember to keep a small portion to cover the seeds after sowing.

Sunflower seeds: Open the bag and pour the seeds into your hand. If the seeds are too small, add sand to make sowing easier. To sow, scatter the seeds over moist, uncompacted coconut soil, 1 to 2 seeds maximum per pot. Save the remaining seeds for later sowing, or sow them directly in your garden or balcony when the weather is sunny. Gently cover seeds with fertilized coco soil and pack lightly.

Watering: Preferably use rainwater or filtered (chlorine-free) water. Prefer light rainfall watering, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just moist, without flooding it with water, throughout cultivation. Think of the soil as a damp sponge, then wring it out. Don't let the coco soil dry out.

Germination: Expose them to light behind glass, without putting them on a radiator, to encourage rapid and abundant germination. Alternatively, from April onwards, expose your balcony, windowsill or terrace to the sun. It takes a few days for the flower seeds to germinate, and the plant then thrives if well watered.

Planting: When the seedlings emerge and reach 3 to 5 cm in height, select just one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Be careful not to break stems or roots when transplanting. Water to encourage regrowth.

Flowering: may need to be pruned in windy regions. Blooms from July to September: there's no point wasting a whole day looking at sunflowers, which don't follow the path of the sun; only their leaves show a discreet phototropism. Leave the flowers to dry out completely, until the seeds have matured and are black and leathery. Cut off the heads and hang them from bare trees in winter, to serve as a larder for the birds that need them during the cold season.
