Growing method :

Coco soils: To promote successful germination, start by soaking fertilized coco pellets in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will swell instantly. Don't forget to keep a small portion to cover the seeds after sowing.
Sowing: Open the bag and pour a few seeds into your hand. If they're too small, add sand to make sowing easier. To sow, sprinkle the seeds onto moist, loose coconut soil, with a maximum of 2-3 seeds per pot. Save the remaining seeds for later sowing, or sow them directly in your garden or on your balcony when the sun is shining. Gently cover the seeds with the fertilized coco potting soil and pack lightly.
Watering: Ideally, use rainwater or filtered (chlorine-free) water. Prefer light rainfall watering, preferably with a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just moist, without clogging it with water, throughout the growing period. Think of the soil as a damp sponge, then drained. Don't let the coco soil dry out.
Germination: Expose them to sunlight behind glass, without placing them above a heat source, to encourage rapid and abundant germination. Alternatively, from April onwards, expose your balcony, windowsill or terrace to the sun. It takes a few days for the flower seeds to germinate, and the plant then thrives if well watered.
Planting: When the seedlings emerge and reach 3 to 5 cm in height, keep just one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Be careful not to break stems or roots when transplanting. Water to encourage regrowth.
Flowering: Cut back if necessary in windy regions. Blooms from July to September: there's no point spending a whole day watching the sunflower as it doesn't follow the path of the sun. Leave the flowers to dry out completely, until the seeds have ripened and are black and tough. Cut off the heads and hang them upside down in bare trees in winter, to serve as a larder for the birds that need them during the cold season.
