Composition :
- Bag of seeds 13x13cm with 2 seeds of Baobab Adansonia Digitata
Growing method :
- Sow seeds: Soak seeds in water for 3 hours before sowing. Sow 2 seeds in a pot. Save the other seeds for later sowing. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and pack lightly.
- Watering: Preferably use rainwater or filtered (chlorine-free) water. It's best to water in light showers, without touching the plants too much, ideally using a hand-held sprayer, to keep the soil just moist, but not waterlogged, throughout the growing period. Think of the soil as a wet, wrung-out sponge. Be gentle and measured.
- Germination: Direct-seed tree seeds germinate like any other seed. Expose them to sunlight behind glass, without placing them over a radiator, and ideally with a plastic water bottle cut out to serve as a greenhouse. Seeds can take up to a week to germinate. Keep the seedlings under the plastic bottle for as long as possible to conserve heat and moisture. The plant will then grow normally, but slowly.
- Planting: When the seedlings emerge and reach 5 to 10 cm in height, select just one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters, always keeping these young plants warm and moist. Take care not to break stems or roots when transplanting, and water to encourage regrowth. You can remove the pots in windy or rainy weather, when the plants are vigorous and at the right temperature.
- Harvesting: Indoors, the baobab is a curiosity to be grown in pots on your veranda in direct sunlight. In Senegal, the baobab is harvested for its fruits, which take around 5-6 months to ripen after flowering and then dry out naturally into woody capsules. These capsules contain baobab powder or flour, used in smoothies, drinks and baked goods.
- Find out more: The baobab (Adansonia digitata) is an emblematic tree of the arid regions of Africa, often referred to as the “tree of life” for its ability to provide food, water, shelter and even wood. According to a popular African legend, when God created the world, the baobab was so proud of its beauty that it was overturned and replanted with its roots upside down, hence its characteristic silhouette. The baobab remains a symbol of strength, resilience and life in the arid landscapes of Africa, where it continues to play an essential role in daily life.
