Planting kit contents:

  • 1 terracotta pot 8 cm in diameter
  • 1 terracotta cup 8 cm in diameter
  • 1 wafer of 6 cm coconut soil to rehydrate in a little warm water
  • 1 sachet of seeds of carnivorous plant to sow

Cultivation mode:

  • Fertilized soil: to promote successful germination, start by soaking the fertilized coconut lozenges in 5 to 6 times their volume of water; they will instantly swell. Unlayer them and fill the pot with a spoon. Do not forget to keep a small part to cover the seeds after sowing.
  • Sowing: Sowing is one of the means to multiply carnivorous plants whose cultivation requires follow-up and patience. Sow the seeds 0.5 cm deep in a very moist or slightly soaked soil. Place at room temperature and use a bottle cut in half as a mini-greenhouse to concentrate heat and moisture. Germination is slow, taking about three weeks, but can spread over several months. So the seedlings must be kept.
  • Watering: ideally, use rainwater or filtered water (without chlorine). Prefer a fine rain watering, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just wet, without gorging it with water, throughout the culture. Think of the Earth as a sponge that is wet and then drained. Do not let the coconut soil dry.
  • Germination: the plant needs a warm and humid climate. Expose it to sunlight behind a window, without putting it over a heater, and ideally with a plastic water bottle cut out to serve as a greenhouse. Seeds can take a week to germinate. Keep the seedlings under the plastic bottle for as long as possible to retain heat and moisture. The plant then grows normally if well watered.
  • Transplanting: No need to transplant; the crop is done in direct seeding/planting. If necessary, aerate by removing a few plants if your seedling is too dense.
  • Flowering: growth is slow; it takes a few months, sometimes more than a year, to have an adult plant. Place in full sun, outside between 15 and 30°C in summer, and below 15°C in winter. Give good humidity, up to 70%. Sarracenia purpurea is one of the easiest carnivorous plants to grow.

Learn more: Carnivorous plants develop incredible schemes to attract and trap the insects they feed on for a nutritional supplement. Sarracenia purpurea transforms its leaves into widely open urns, containing nectar in their bottoms. Insects, attracted by the smell, venture there and can no longer climb up the smooth walls.
