Contents:
- 1 black terracotta pot with pad printing
- 1 packet of Edelweiss seeds to sow
- 2 coconut fibre pellets to rehydrate
Growing method: 6 cm black pot growing kit - Edelweiss
- Fertilised soil: To ensure successful germination, start by soaking the fertilised coconut fibre pellets in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will swell instantly. Mix them together and fill the pot with a spoon. Remember to keep a small amount to cover the seeds after sowing.
- Sowing Edelweiss seeds: Open the packet and pour the seeds into your hand. If they are too small, add sand to make sowing easier. To sow, sprinkle the seeds onto the moist, loose coconut fibre, using a maximum of 2 to 3 seeds per pot. Keep the rest of the seeds for later sowing or for sowing directly in your garden or on your balcony when the weather is warm. Gently cover the seeds with fertilised coconut soil and press down lightly.
- Contrary to popular belief, sowing edelweiss is easy, even in the plains and far from its native mountains.
- Watering flower seeds: Ideally, use rainwater or filtered water (without chlorine). Water with a fine spray, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just moist, without saturating it, throughout the growing season. Imagine the soil as a wet sponge that has been wrung out. Do not allow the coconut fibre to dry out.
- Germinating flower seeds: Place behind a window in sunlight, without placing above a heater, to encourage rapid and abundant germination. Alternatively, from April onwards, place in the sun on your balcony, window sill or terrace. Flower seeds take about 10 days to germinate and the plant will then grow if it is well watered. Transplanting flower seedlings: When the seedlings emerge and reach 3 to 5 cm in height, select a single plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Be careful not to break the stems or roots when transplanting. Water to encourage regrowth. Repot or plant in the garden in August.
- Flowering: Leave the pots outside all year round, except in very humid regions where it is preferable to bring them indoors in winter. Repot only every 2 years, and admire the curious little flowers between July and September.
- Note: Snowflake is one of the tallest flowering plants in the world. Its small size, a few centimetres to less than 20 cm, and especially its woolly coating on all parts of the plant, including the flowers, reflect its perfect adaptation to the harsh conditions of high altitudes: it can grow up to 3,400 m!
