Planting kit contents:
- 8 cm-diameter terracotta pot
- 8 cm-diameter terracotta dish
- 1 6 cm coconut earth plate to be rehydrated in lukewarm water
- 2 peanut seeds
Growing method :
- Fertilized soil: To encourage successful germination, start by soaking fertilized coconut soil pellets in 5 to 6 times their volume of water; they will swell instantly. Mix them and fill the pot with a spoon. Don't forget to keep a small amount to cover the seeds after sowing.
- Sowing: before sowing, remove the seeds from the shell. Sow 2 seeds in the pot. Keep the others for later sowing or to sow directly on your balcony when the weather's right. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and pack lightly.
- Watering: ideally, use rainwater or filtered (chlorine-free) water. Prefer light rainfall watering, ideally using a hand-held sprayer, to keep the soil just moist, but not waterlogged, throughout the growing process. Think of the soil as a wet sponge, then wring it out. Don't let the soil dry out.
- Germination: expose to sunlight behind glass, without heating, to encourage rapid and abundant germination. Germination is rapid and starts within a few days; the seedling grows rapidly.
- Transplanting: Once the seedlings have emerged and reached a height of 5 cm, select just one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Be careful not to break stems or roots when transplanting. Water to encourage regrowth.
- Harvesting: Peanuts are tubers (like potatoes) that can be harvested from August to mid-September at root level. This tropical plant needs heat and water. So you have to dig up the plant to find the peanuts. Remove the soil and dry them in the sun.
