Composition :

  • 1 terracotta pot "Antique", diameter 13 cm
  • 1 bag of seeds from Suzanne with black eyes to sow
  • 3 coconut lozenges to rehydrate
  • 1 mode of cultivation

Cultivation mode :

  • Coconut lands: To promote successful germination, start by soaking the fertilized coconut lozenges in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will instantly swell. Do not forget to keep a small portion to cover the seeds after sowing.
  • Sowing: Open the bag and pour seeds into your hand. If they are too small, add sand to make it easier to sow. For sowing, sprinkle the seeds on the wet uncompact coconut soil, maximum 2 to 3 seeds per pot. Save the rest of the seeds for later sowing or to sow directly in your garden or on your balcony when the weather is nice. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and tamp lightly.
  • Watering: Ideally use rainwater or filtered water (without chlorine). Prefer a fine rain watering, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just wet, without gorging it with water, throughout the culture. Imagine the soil that has to stay like a wet sponge and then wrung out. Do not let the coconut soil dry.
  • Germination: Expose to sunlight behind a glass, without putting on top of a heating, to promote rapid and abundant germination. Otherwise, from April on, expose yourself to the sun on your balcony, window sill or terrace. The germination of flower seeds takes a few days and the plant then grows if well watered.
  • Transplanting: When the seedlings emerge and reach 3 to 5 cm in height, select only one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Be careful to be delicate, not to break the stems or roots when transplanting. Water to promote growth.
  • Flowering: Give a support to make the Suzanne climb, or grow in pot, suspension or hanging plant for cascades of flowers. Remove wilted flowers as you go for extended flowering. Blooming from June to frosts.
  • Our advice: The Black-eyed Suzanne is traditionally grown as an annual plant, but in favorable conditions it behaves perennial, this is the case of gardens with mild climates, as on the Mediterranean rim. Elsewhere, it is in our best interest to simply overwinter the plant in frost-free conditions, around 8°C, and see it return in spring with a repotting in brand new soil.
