Composition :

  • 1 terracotta pot "Antique", diameter 13cm
  • 1 bag of red sunflower "Autumn beauty" to sow
  • 3 coconut lozenges to rehydrate
  • 1 mode of cultivation

Cultivation mode :

  • Coconut lands: To promote successful germination, start by soaking the fertilized coconut lozenges in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will instantly swell. Do not forget to keep a small portion to cover the seeds after sowing.
  • Sowing Sunflower seeds inside: Open the bag and pour seeds into your hand. If they are too small, add sand to make it easier to sow. For sowing, sprinkle the seeds on the wet uncompact coconut soil, maximum 2 to 3 seeds per pot. Save the rest of the seeds for later sowing or to sow directly in your garden or on your balcony when the weather is nice. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and tamp lightly.
  • Watering flower seeds: Ideally use rainwater or filtered water (without chlorine). Prefer a fine rain watering, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just wet, without gorging it with water, throughout the culture. Imagine the soil that has to stay like a wet sponge and then wrung out. Do not let the coconut land dry.
  • The germination of flower seeds: Expose to sunlight behind a glass, without putting on top of a heating, to promote rapid and abundant germination. Otherwise, from April on, expose yourself to the sun on your balcony, window sill or terrace. The germination of flower seeds takes a few days and the plant then grows if well watered.
  • Transplanting flower plants: When the seedlings emerge and reach 3 to 5 cm in height, select only one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Be careful to be delicate, not to break the stems or roots when transplanting. Water to promote regrowth
  • Flowering: Tuteurer possibly in windy regions. Flowering from July to September. It is useless to lose a full day to observe the sunflower does not follow the course of the sun, only its leaves show some phototropism, quite discreet. Let the flowers dry completely, go to the end of the maturation of the seeds which must be black and leathery. Cut the heads and hang them down in bare trees in winter, they serve as a pantry for birds who need it well during the cold season.
  • Read more: The giant sunflower is one of the large yellow fields that can be admired in the countryside in summer, although the cultivated varieties are selected for oil production and not for ornamentation. It gives a large, bright golden yellow flower with a black center carried by a sturdy stem that is difficult to ignore. Giant, it is also by its large leaves. Originally the Indians of America, where it originated, drew an oil and a flour but also a dye.
